Fabulous People: Edward Monkton
“I believe my work appeals most strongly to people with profound spirits… yet playful hearts.”
Giles Andreae (Edward Monkton)
The Edward Monkton character is the brainchild of an Oxford University graduate Giles Andreae who started his career as a popular cartoonist. I first came across his card collection in Exclusive Books while browsing for a birthday card. His design is unforgettably unique. My favourite thing about his work is the seemingly serious topics that he twists into a simple image of colourless stick figures and scenery. The ‘shoes of salvation’ is one of favourites – it’s too difficult to chose a single of one his works over the others though. He rips of love so well! I would love to start collecting his books (I know they’re available in Exclusive Books) They’re great! Like the ‘toaster of affection’.
The Riverside Gallery did a much better job of getting my point across about his work…
‘ Monkton’s work is as simple as it is profound – as philosophical as it is decorative. He takes on the big subjects that have fascinated artists and writers through the centuries… love, happiness, truth, beauty, the struggle of the soul to create meaning out of life, and gives them his own unique twist. Wry humour, resonant, evocative wording and a bold, graphic visual style are the hallmarks of this wistful, playful artist/poet.’
